Aero Glass in Windows 8

Microsoft has removed Aero Glass from Windows 8.

However, a programmer known as “Big Muscle” has written a utility called Glass8 that hooks into the DWM, and re-adds the transparency and blur effects.

You can download Glass8 here.

To use Glass8:

  1. Extract the archive to C:\DWM
  2. Edit LoadGlass__AppInit_DLLs.reg, changing  "AppInit_DLLs"="E:\\DWM\\MyDWM\\DWMGlass.dll" to "AppInit_DLLs"="C:\\DWM\\DWMGlass.dll"
  3. Open LoadGlass__AppInit_DLLs.reg to add it to the registry
  4. Restart DWM
    1. Open Task Manager
    2. If you can’t see “Desktop Window Manager”, click More Details
    3. Click on Desktop Window Manager
    4. Click End Task
    5. Check “Abandon unsaved data and shut down”
    6. Click “Shut down” (it shouldn’t shut down the computer, but save your work regardless)

Windows Blue

An early build of the next version of Windows (known as Windows Blue or Windows 9) was leaked recently.

It brings some much-needed improvements to Windows 8, such as 50/50 snapping for apps, and more Start screen tile sizes.

It comes with Internet Explorer 11, which is mostly the same as IE10.
It’s interesting that “Windows 8″ is listed as a compatibility mode for desktop apps.

To install VirtualBox guest additions, the installer has to be put in Windows 8 compatibility mode.
